Lightning is one of the natural disasters that can cause fatalities and serious damage to property. It’s worth noting that not every structure is protected by a lightning protection system or protected properly. And after installing a lightning protection system, most people assume that they are protected, but few consider that just one small mistake beyond their control can result in a serious consequence if lightning strikes. Therefore, designing and periodically checking the lightning protection system is extremely important.

Maintenance regulations for the lightning protection system

The lightning protection system should be regularly maintained and inspected, at least once a year before the lightning season, and checked, repaired, replaced devices that have lost their lightning protection capability, measured ground resistance and take remedial measures if ground resistance is not within the specified range, and regularly clean and maintain the lightning protection system.

The basic principle of a lightning protection system is to prevent the energy of a lightning strike from affecting electronic devices. To achieve this, the lightning protection system needs to:

1. Identify where the lightning strikes and the locations where lightning is most likely to pass through to the ground (avoiding sensitive areas of electronic devices);
2. Have a harmonious cooperation between the earth conductors and surge protective devices;
3. Choose the direct lightning protection device or transmission based on the needs of use;
4. The lightning rod has no leakage and high sensitivity;
5. Conductors are designed to channel lightning to the ground;
6. The earth system is ensured.
7. Regulations for installing the lightning protection system

a/ Grounding System (Earthing System)

• Before installing lightning protection equipment (direct lightning protection and induced lightning protection), the earthing system for lightning protection must be examined and checked.

b/ Direct Lightning Protection System Installation

• Lightning rods must be installed according to the installation instructions.
• The grounding cable must be securely clamped.
• The grounding resistance of the direct lightning protection system must be lower than the required value.
• When there are thunderstorms or lightning strikes, it is strictly forbidden to erect lightning rods, work on roof tops, or places where contact with lightning rods, mains or grounding cables may occur.
• Warning labels must be posted in the area where the lightning protection system is being installed.

c/ Induced Lightning Protection System Installation

• Before installation, the type of lightning protection equipment, connection diagram, and power grid specifications must be re-checked to ensure that the equipment is installed according to the manufacturer’s standards.
• The lightning protection equipment must be installed by professional technicians.
• The grounding resistance for the lightning protection equipment must meet lightning protection standards.

• The electrical source must not be connected to the lightning protection equipment without a safe connection or ground connection.
